If you are living in Nigeria, I guess you’ll be tired by now with the adverts and promotional efforts by telecommunication companies such as Globacom, Zain Nigeria, Etisalat Nigeria and MTN Nigeria, especially on the radio.
One of such is the Glo “Text for Win Super Promo”, designed to create 103 millionaires in Nigeria and claims to have rewarded some subscribers with 1 million naira. Are you one of them?
To capture audience attention, Globacom has been using notable Nollywood actors and actresses such as Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Ramsey Nouah amongst others to emphasize that to become a celebrity is not a day’s job, but to become a millionaire could be instant thing.
As easy and enticing as this sound, it still takes incredible luck to win a million naira (or a million dollars, as in the case of Etisalat’s 9jillions Promo), since they’ve all been designed like every other lottery programme in the world. In fact, you may end up frustrated, just because you want to become a millionaire.
While I’m not against attempts to become a millionaire through these promotional efforts, my concern is on the socio-economic impact this hype has on the Nigerian people.
Will all of these promotional campaigns not make people lazy and unproductive? Would it not discourage the effective use of their minds to generate millions through smart and viable ideas?

Not that winning a million naira and investing in a business startup is such a bad idea, but what if that venture fails because the owner lacks the human and financial management skills needed succeed in a business venture?
Could these telecommunication companies rather redirect their mega-million bonanzas towards excellent customer service initiatives, quality network support, and improved product developments?
Why engage in desperate and lame promotional efforts such as the one I received on my mobile phone recently:
“Shhh, dis one na secret…don’t tell anyone! Your name is among Glo’s favourites for tonight’s N1 million CASH! Grab it texting WIN to 555 NOW! Costs N100/SMS”.
Well, sorry Globacom, I’m going to tell: Your recent promotional efforts really suck! Now, stop sending me silly text messages or else…

True talk. There’s just no effort to integrate creativity in their strategy of making people millionaires.Sham promos!
It's really getting ridiculous !
It is very provoking that they’re happy to splash millions on “lotteries” when they core business is telecoms. It gets worse that their core business is even not the best.
I suggest Globacom re-brands as Glotto Nigeria:-D
