Let it go! You do not need CNN or anyone else to validate your work or who you are. Don't fall into that mind trap, keep up the good work. Techloy. Let it go!

This vindicates my position on spurious lists and awards in the African tech space. Because CNN, Forbes etc said it does not mean that it must be true. It is poetic justice that they are now also doing this to Techloy :) To me a lot of Startups or personalities in the tech space now exist to be on lists or to simply to make enough noise so that they get an award then disappear into oblivion. I had this exact conversation with an incubator in Kenya who were concerned that because of the awards one of their porfolio companies won, they are no longer focussing on solving problems but basking in the limelight. I think Erik Hersman is more African than anyone who ever doubts his "Africanness". He is one person I truly admire and for the first time I think CNN or any other have a list I somewhat believe in I could not stop laughing after I read this post. It's the same question when people of Nigerian parentage who were born outside Nigeria and lived all their lives outside Nigeria are claimed by Nigeria and the startups listed as part of Nigeria. It's the issue that arises when I am born in Lagos and have lived in Lagos for most of my life and yet declared to be from a part of the country I have spent less than a total of 2 months in. Africa needs to reset its idea of what makes an African African. If Erik's blog calls itself "White African" even if his blog bio doesn't, then I think it's pretty clear what his continental identity is. If you must know he was born a Kenyan by American parents and that makes him Kenyan by birth. His contribution outweighs many of the so called Africans. Eric Hersman is more African, than many of us would ever be. He has contributed immensely to the technology scene in Africa. Some of us need a lot of growing up to do. It is not the color of our skin nor the place we were born that makes us part of an ecosystem. It is the impact we make in other peoples lives in that particular society that shapes our identity.
