Have you ever wanted to surf the internet on your TV? Or perhaps you’d like to watch HD movies, access local content or render android apps on TV?

Encipher, the cloud computing company that released its own tablet, INYE last year has announced they’ll be launching Encipher TV, which does pretty much what the Apple TV does, and maybe more.

Update: They’ve just released a survey for Encipher TV. Take the survey here: http://yrn.me/jod84

Encipher TV wants to aggregate all your media and social trends to your TV via the use of a setup box.

Encipher TV is powered by Android 2.2, and armed with a HDMI output, Wifi, bluetooth connectivity to your keyboard, 3 USB ports and a remote control.

With Encipher TV, you can:

1. Surf the net on your TV

2. Watch your HD movies from an external HD

3. Connect to Encipher’s Video-on-Demand portal for user-generated local content and movies.

Below are the full specifications for the Encipher device:

Encipher intends to provide a media hosting service to hold all media files for appropriate broadcast over the internet.

Now here comes my best part:

Applications built by developers via the Encipher AppStore (to be launched) can be installed on the device for viewing on TV.

So any cool local gaming apps built for Encipher INYE tablet can also be rendered on the Encipher TV.

Thoughts

While Encipher has not announced how much its TV will cost, I’m guessing that it’ll be within the range of N15,000 to N30,000 (about $100 – $200) given the nature of its TV specs.

Apple TV currently sells for $99 and there are reports that Microsoft TV to be announced at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week would sell at $200 a piece.

While this is an emerging market even in the U.S where internet-connected TVs now account for 12% of total flat-screen TV sales, according to a report by The NPD Group, there are still potentials for the Nigerian market.

It’ll be interesting to see how Encipher, and possibly other tablet PC players will impact in this market.
