Today, Encipher Limited announced that their ‘highly controversial‘ Andriod-powered tablet will be available only in Nigeria (for now) and starting at N55,000 ($399).
Update: 07/05 – The Encipher Tablet will be unveiled at the British Council, Abuja Rooftop Cafe on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2pm.
Update: 17/05 – The Encipher Tablet codenamed “The One” will be unveiled at Barcamp Nigeria 2010 on Saturday, May 22 at the CITS, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba.
The news of the Encipher Tablet was broken last week and has already gotten the attention of huge tech and mobile review blogs around the world such as VentureBeat and GigaOM’s JKOnTheRun blog.
According to Saheed Adepoju, Encipher’s Innovation Manager,
We envisage that lots of application development will take to the cloud. We are offering Cloud Storage options complete with set of APIs to access these them.
5GB (1yr): N31,200.
10GB (1yr): N60,000.

Chris Davies of SlashGear suggested that “if Encipher can bring the slate in sufficiently cheaply and bundle it with a compelling set of cloud services, they may be able to differentiate themselves in a way rivals have proved unable to.”
I agree with Chris and with the way things are going, that’s likely what the guys at Encipher want to achieve. At $399, the Encipher Tablet seems like a good deal. The Apple iPad starts at $499, although the iPad specs are better off.
Updated: Encipher also provided the following specs as “final agreed specifications”:
- Price: N55,000.
- Operating System: Android 1.6.
- CPU: Rockchip 2808 1Ghz.
- Storage capacity: 512MB RAM. 16GB Nand Flash storage, SDCard
- Display: 800 x 480 pixel.
- Input: Touch screen, 3-axis accelerometer.
- Camera: 1.3 mega pixel.
- Connectivity: Wifi (802.11b/g), Micro-USB,
- Dimensions: 208 x 119 x 24.5mm.
- Online services: Android Market.
When compared to the earlier specs, I noticed that the CPU for the ‘real deal’ will run on Rockchip 2808 processor @1Ghz, while other specs would virtually remain the same, except for the battery life that might change.
In response to questions and comments about the genuineness of the Encipher tablet, the startup company intends to have attendees and others convene at a preferred location (TBD) so they can have a first-hand experience of the device.

While I’m yet to get a feel of the Encipher Tablet, it’s hard to do a proper review, so bear with me. Like you, I guess we’ll keep watching…

I think this is a nice concept but my only misgivings is with the pricing of storage and other add-ons, this to me is way above the reach of the average Nigerian. Unless they wish to be elitist ala Apple computers.
Hi Pystar. The storage and add on is for one year. With the currrent spendings on ICT infrastructure in Nigeria (i.e power, maintenance etc), i believe in the long run, Hosted Exchange for example is a good deal. Also with respect to it being above the reach of the average Nigerian, it's targeted towards businesses who have budgets for ICT spendings. This will help in lowering costs. For your information, all computer products such as IBM, HP, APPLE, just to name a few were manufactured in China with America standard or specification design. The question now is will Nigeria design meet the same standard.
