Taafoo: Get hooked up with your favourite personality

Whoever your favourite personality is – comedian, radio presenter, dj, actor, CEO, musician, motivational speaker or pastor – Taafoo lets you stay up close with that person no matter their location.
Taafoo is a new (free) service that keeps you hooked-up through your mobile phone with celebrities, personalities, groups and businesses by recieving short entertaining or information text alerts called “taafs” directly from them on your mobile phone.
Taafoo does not charge for its services but includes advertisement at the bottom of the messages, so guess that’s how they make money. Taafoo is also offering users a chance to wine and dine in Dubai for 3 nights. Details here.
How does it work?
When you sign up, you’ll be asked to send the text message ‘Verify 1128′ without the quotes to 07036110000 for account verification. Verifying your account enables taafs delivery and text-to-web commentary.
Taafoo does not charge you for receiving text messages, however your GSM operator’s normal text messaging fee may apply. Taafoo uses the long number +234(703)611-0000 to send the messages, so no shortcodes.
Taafoo is a subscription service that enables you to get hooked-up with your favourite personalities such as musicians, actors, comedians, clothing designers, pastors, politicians, brands, societies, etc., by receiving short entertaining or informative text alerts called “taafs” on your mobile phone directly from the personality.

Personalities use taafoo to share Daily lifestyle experiences, Life changing tips/advice, What’s happening now, Event information, New product releases and lots more.
Taafoo is a two-way communication between the subscriber and the personalities. Subscribers can respond to taafs by sending comments right from their mobile phones to the personalities.
Taafoo was born out of a desire to connect celebrities and other personalities with their fans. According to Taafoo, “We spoke to a number of people, we spoke to some personalities willing to share and taafoo was born.”
My thoughts
This is one of the best mobile-based services in Nigeria at the moment. I think that more and more people would love to connect with their favourite personalities via this service, even though Facebook seems to be getting a lot of attention.
And talking about attention, Taafoo has gotten a huge buzz via Facebook with over 1000 fans (and counting), a service just launched in August 2009. Simply another great innovation from the guys at Legwork! Great work, guys!

Months ago, I had mentioned the only edge ‘me too’ services like legwork can have over the likes of global services facebook is to provide very local services that facebook doesn’t and can’t provide. This looks like a good example of that kind of service.
Totally agree with you, Dej! Last year, I suggested that social network owners focus on developing services that would have local intent.
We've got lots of problems (e.g traffic) that can be solved using mobile applications/technology.
Why waste our time on Facebook?
