Can Digital Media Drive Education in Nigeria?

It seems like digital media could shape the future of education in Nigeria and change the way students learn and interact, as the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Intel Corporation and the Education Trust Fund (ETF) recently partnered to develop a programme called SkooolNigeria.

SkooolNigeria is an interactive web-based education programme that facilitates the teaching and learning of mathematics and science subjects in Nigerian secondary schools. The site which is freely available to all Nigerian teachers and students provides study notes, examination guides as well as other digital materials.

A few months ago, I wrote about a site called instantrevision.com (now African Virtual School) that helps students to prepare for WAEC, NECO, etc exams via web-based tools. Today, we are now experiencing major investments in education via digital media from huge companies and the government.

However, there are a few challenges to overcome such as lack of access to Internet facilities in most schools, I’m particularly impressed and would hope that they’ll be sustainable and help support the goal to improve education in Nigeria.

TakingITGlobal.org may have encouraged collaboration, interaction and participation in Nigeria, but perhaps a more focused initiative such as SkooolNigeria will create a better impact amongst Nigerian students, teachers and parents.

And hopefully, we at Startups Nigeria would help drive the entrepreneurial spirit amongst Nigerian students’ right from their Secondary School years or University life through digital media training, education and consultancy.

We’ll just hope that we won’t be encouraging students to dropout of school and start business ventures:-)
